Common Problems

"It keeps asking for my password!" - remember, this can also mean that you have mis-typed your user name. Make sure you enter your username exactly as you have given it to us. Your username and the one we have on record for you must match. Also, do not add the @net-star.net for logging in.

"The modem clicks and I get a 'No Dial-Tone' message" - check to make sure that the telephone line is plugged into the correct jack on the modem. Many modems have a pass-through connect so a telephone may be used when the modem is offline. Check to make sure that the line is not plugged in to the port marked "phone". Also try testing the line with a telephone to see if you can hear a dial-tone.
"I hear a recording from the modem after it dials" -
  • double check to see that you are dialing the correct phone number for your area.
  • Also check to see that only seven digits are entered: local calls do not require the area code.

If you are at your place of work, check to see if you need to add a "9," or "7," to get an outside line.

Some people have reported getting an "Unable to negotiate compatible dial-up protocol " error message. Putting in a host and domain name in the TCP/IP Properties in the Network section of Control Panel seems to resolve the problem.

If you continue to have difficulties, you will need to set up the TCP/IP stack.

Click the Start button and choose Settings, Control Panel, and then choose the Network icon.

Select the TCP/IP protocol and then Properties.
You should have the following settings selected:

IP Address               Obtain an IP address
                               automatically
     WINS Configuration        Disable WINS Resolution
     Gateway                   leave blank
     Client for MS Networks    selected
     Advanced                  leave with defaults
     Enable DNS                selected
     Host                      username
     Domain                    net-star.net
     DNS Server Search Order   205.214.33.5,
                               205.214.33.2

When you are done, click OK twice and then reboot your system.

You should now have access to the Internet.
